76ers Center Jason Smith Suffers Injury to Left Knee
Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that center Jason Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during normal basketball activity on Wednesday. Smith was examined by team Physician Dr. Jack McPhilemy on Thursday evening and will receive a second opinion from Dr. Dave Altchek in the coming weeks. No timetable has been set for his return. Additional updates will be provided when they become available.
President Bush to Attend U.S.-China Basketball Opener?
In the DALLAS MORNING NEWS, Brad Townsend reports "last week, President Bush said in a television interview that in addition to attending tonight's opening ceremony, he might attend Sunday's basketball opener between the United States and China. United States Olympic Committee officials said they know of no confirmation that Bush will be there, but Team USA basketball players talked as though it's a done deal. ‘It's going to be exciting,' Mavericks and Team USA point guard Jason Kidd said. ‘You can put Game 7, or times it by 7, because it's going to be something that nobody's experienced before. I don't know if anybody's had a president come to a game to watch.'"
Canadians Can Take Pride in Rooting for U.S. Team's Chris Bosh
From CBC SPORTS, Jesse Campigotto writes "for Canadian basketball fans, Chris Bosh is about as close as they'll get to Beijing. It's a tenuous link, considering the Toronto Raptors star was born, and still makes his off-season home, in Dallas. But with the red and white still reeling from an unsuccessful qualification attempt, hoopheads north of the border can turn their lonely eyes to Bosh when the Olympic basketball tournament kicks off Aug. 9 (Day 2). His hometown notwithstanding, Canucks could do a lot worse than pulling for the likable Bosh, whose multifaceted game could make him a star for the U.S. team at his first Olympics. ‘He's the perfect international player,' Leo Rautins, a Raptors colour man and the head coach of Canada's ill-fated national team, told CBCSports.ca. "He's inside, outside, he shoots the ball, he can put it on the floor, he runs.‘The U.S. team knows [that] and that's why they're thrilled to have him.'"
Kidd Fighting Head Cold
The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports "Mavericks guard Jason Kidd missed Wednesday's practice with a head cold, but despite feeling "terrible" he came to Friday morning's (Thursday night Dallas time) Team USA media availability. ‘I just came here because I didn't want this to become a big story,' he said, adding that despite fighting the cold for three days he will be fine for Sunday's opener against China. ‘The rim is still 10, the ball is still round, so I didn't have to go see another gym. And I don't shoot that much, anyway.'”
NBA Star Bogut Fit For Aussies in Opener
From the AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, "Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut declared himself fit Friday to play for Australia in their Olympic opener, content to escape the hype surrounding his fellow NBA superstars on the USA team.'I'm fine,' he said. ‘I practiced on Thursday for the first time in about four days and pulled up pretty well, no swelling, pain is a minimum, so I'm pretty good.' The seven-footer injured his ankle last week during a warm-up game in Nanjing, and his recovery is welcome news for the Boomers as they prepare to face Croatia on Sunday. The soreness put him out of their game against Team USA in Shanghai this week, which the Americans won 87-76 with Miami Heat shooting guard Dwyane Wade scoring nine points in the fourth quarter to hold off the surging Boomers. The closeness of that encounter left many wondering what the outcome would have been if Bogut had played.”
